ARTIVIST : contracting based on the Nash Equilibrium by JoFF Rae

ARTIVIST : creative developed a series of contracts that involve a shared risk/shared profit that helps venues & artists achieve a common goal - successful events.

The contract method, developed for Salmonella Dub, reduces standard deposits & works on a percentage break of gross profit; both the artist & the venue need to expel effort to maximise returns & both benefit greatly by working together to achieve this success.

"We modelled the contract at a couple of gigs earlier this year & it went well... since then a major festival has picked up the idea & it was essential in securing acts" says JoFF Rae of the contract... "the key is to make an agreement & see the benefits to yourself & to others in the equation & stick to it through to delivery - possibly a practical example of the Nash Equilibrium."

The NYE festival La De Da picked up the contracting method & with help from JoFF Rae secured all of its acts on $10K in deposits; the event sold out in 10 days.  However Rae was concerned that the promoter had not shared the complete success of the event with the acts, only declaring 10,000 PAX sales when there was 13,500 PAX.  This defeats the purpose of the contracting ethic.

The Nash Equilibrium - informal definition:  From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Informally, a set of strategies is a Nash equilibrium if no player can do better by unilaterally changing his or her strategy. To see what this means, imagine that each player is told the strategies of the others. Suppose then that each player asks himself or herself: "Knowing the strategies of the other players, and treating the strategies of the other players as set in stone, can I benefit by changing my strategy?" If any player would answer "Yes", then that set of strategies is not a Nash equilibrium. But if every player prefers not to switch (or is indifferent between switching and not) then the set of strategies is a Nash equilibrium.

Thus, each strategy in a Nash equilibrium is a best response to all other strategies in that equilibrium.[3] The Nash equilibrium may sometimes appear non-rational in a third-person perspective. This is because it may happen that a Nash equilibrium is not Pareto optimal. The Nash equilibrium may also have non-rational consequences in sequential games because players may "threaten" each other with non-rational moves. For such games the Subgame perfect Nash equilibrium may be more meaningful as a tool of analysis.

ARTIVIST : creative on a unique stage set & projection system for SirMT (Michel Tuffery) in a collaboration with Rhombus.

The demands of this system were simple but impressive; ARTIVIST : creative JoFF Rae & Michel Tuffery M.N.Z.M. developed this system with specific choreographed content & performance.

"This is an amazing project that is specifically for export" says JoFF, "the idea has been met with gasps of excitement from key International festival organisers & they are building their productions to suit our installation!"

ARTIVIST : creative is investing in specialised equipment including fibre optic dual SC cable to meet the specific demands of Tuffery... "he has asked for cameras in specific areas of the installation that are difficult to get to - especially when he wants to be at front of house" says JoFF Rae, "this system involves the Ohm64 controller, the 21" Wacom Cintiq interactive pen display & some trick kit on the DV camera tip... the fibre optic cable is expensive but will make a massive difference!"

Other features of the custom kit are the 5 massive projectors, the 9m square 3D mesh structure known as the 'Kina' (a fantastic mesh sculpture by Tuffery that receives a multiple composite projection through it) & composed visuals across 30 square meters of projections.

Tuffery uses a library of archive footage from the Pacific Islands including Rarotonga & Samoa with modern images & video loops creating a visual narrative to compliment the exquisitely produced music of Rhombus.

Rhombus Productions are in the new SECRET central city Welli' studio... one of the old town buildings with a history that is all about creativity & productivity... all based on some antithetic ideas!

In a "secret" that was not well kept the Martin Square Studio once housed the New Zealand Secret Intelligence Service!  The nations security issues were kept quiet in this place... it later became the house of NZ iconic band Bailter Space - once known to be the nations loudest band ever!!!

Bailter Space (Brent McLachlan, Alister Parker & John Halvorsen - previously the Gordons) changed the nature of the 'creative' business that was conducted in there, collecting & making a different type of record to previous tenants!  Bailter Space now reside in NYC & have rejected potential fame by rejecting commercial success... these guys influenced & mentored Kiwi bands such as Shihad with Brent often doing sound with Andy Craig (Welli icon Bass player & audio engineer)!

... it's been a couple of different studio entities since the Bailter Space days... Mike Gibson teamed up with Andrew Downes (ex Mediate Studios) to form Trident Studios.  Nearly every prominent & obscure Wellington musician & band of note has had some recording or social experience in there!  Trinity Roots, Alda Rezende, Charlotte Yates, OdESSA, Twinset, Sheba, Little Bushmen to name a few that have worked in the facility.  Mike has left much of his gear in the studio & will continue to collaborate with the Rhombus crew.

Now Rhombus are building a unique media studio in an exciting & innovative plan to lift their creative output & productivity.  ARTIVIST : creative JoFF Rae & artist Michel Tuffery MNZM will continue to collaborate with the group to create artistic visual & soundscapes like never before!

The Rhombus production crew comprises band founders Thomas Voyce and Simon Rycroft with Koa Williams are in the studio full time. In addition to production, Thomas plays bass / keys and writes lyrics, Simon handles electronic tweaks, beats and dubs while Koa takes to turntable duties as DJ & Band/Company/Studio Manager.
