Synopsis

The Octagon is a proposed Kaupapa Māori innovation hub and independent digital commissioning service for the arts, designed to position Auckland as a centre for contemporary Māori creativity, immersive technologies and cultural storytelling. Developed by TOI Agency and powered by iSPARX™, the initiative combines artist development, digital innovation, public engagement and event production into a single sustainable ecosystem.

The vision is to create a permanent creative environment where emerging and established artists can develop work through residencies, commissions, workshops and collaborative projects. By integrating technologies such as augmented reality, geospatial experiences and immersive media with mātauranga Māori, The Octagon seeks to expand how audiences experience art while providing artists with new tools, platforms and commercial opportunities.

Beyond being a creative studio, The Octagon is conceived as a cultural destination that produces exhibitions, boutique events, public art installations, concerts and community activations. It proposes partnerships with mana whenua, councils, galleries, industry partners and the private sector to create programmes that strengthen Auckland’s cultural identity while encouraging tourism, education and local economic development.

A central feature is its Independent Digital Commissioning Service for the Arts, providing artists with technical expertise, production support, funding pathways and access to advanced digital platforms to realise ambitious works in augmented reality and immersive media. This service aims to remove traditional barriers to digital art production while positioning Māori innovation at the forefront of international creative practice.

The proposal is supported by examples of previous collaborations with leading Māori artists including Tāme Iti, Kereama Taepa, PAKU, HA-HA (Regan Tamanui) and Wharenui Harikoa, demonstrating an established capability in delivering award-winning digital cultural experiences.

Ultimately, The Octagon presents a long-term vision for an artist-led, technology-enabled cultural institution that empowers Māori creative leadership, develops sustainable careers for artists, and establishes Auckland as a global centre for Indigenous digital arts and innovation.
