Project Introduction: AR+concierge™ Installation and App Overview
This project presents a unique AR-based installation that showcases the integration of art, storytelling, and augmented reality (AR) through the *AR+concierge™* platform. The installation features a curated selection of interactive works by renowned Māori artists and designers, with a particular focus on how AR enhances the cultural and immersive storytelling experience.
The installation will incorporate three primary works:
1. Paku Blocks
Designed by Johnson Whitehira and James Prier, this image-tracked AR experience brings two larger than life “toy” blocks to life. Each block, adorned with images of Atua (Māori deities), responds to the *AR+concierge™* app by revealing a 3D animated story accompanied by immersive audio.
2. HA-HA mApp Stencil
Created by street artist HA-HA aka Regan Tamanui, this interactive piece allows users to leave their own digital mark in the space. The stencil acts as a canvas where participants can contribute to the evolving artwork using the app, making them a part of the exhibit. This feature draws on the stencil techniques of HA-HA to explore the concept of presence and participation in a shared virtual space.
3. Ruatoki by Tame Iti
A 360° AR portal that provides a location-specific immersive storytelling experience. The scene takes users into the heart of Ruatoki, using augmented reality to narrate a rich, cultural story in an immersive, all-around visual experience. The work of Tame Iti here encapsulates the powerful connection between place, story, and identity.
App Functionality and User Engagement
The *AR+concierge™* app will serve as the primary interface for users to interact with the installation’s AR experiences. Through telemetrics and survey data collection, we will gather insights into user engagement, interaction patterns, and emotional responses to the AR content. This data will inform our study on how multi-user AR experiences affect the suspension of disbelief and overall user immersion.
The app will feature:
- Interactive Tracking: Users can scan the artworks to unlock the animated stories and stencils.
- User Feedback Mechanism: Surveys will pop up at key interaction points, requesting feedback on the experience.
- Take-Home Experience: To incentivize participation, users will receive a "take-home" AR element as a reward for engaging with the installation via the app. This could be an exclusive piece of digital art or a custom interactive feature linked to their visit.
- Deep Links to Artists: The app will provide deep links to the artist-specific apps, enabling users to explore more of their work and build a lasting connection with their creative journey.
Workshops and Community Engagement
In each location where the installation is hosted, workshops will be conducted to further engage the local community. These sessions will focus on introducing the AR+concierge™ platform, explaining how the technology enhances cultural storytelling, and guiding participants through the creative possibilities of augmented reality. The workshops will provide an additional layer of interaction, allowing users to directly contribute ideas and insights, enriching the experience for all participants.
